Zinger Key Points
  • Evil Geniuses, a Seattle-based esports organization, seeks sale and might exit esports by 2023, as reported by Sports Business Journal.
  • Renowned as one of the industry's biggest and oldest names, EG claims a diverse fanbase.

The Seattle-based esports organization Evil Geniuses (EG) is reportedly for sale, with its owners seeking to divest the team wholly or partially.

According to a Sports Business Journal (SBJ) report, the company, established in 1999 and featuring teams in games like Valorant, League of Legends, Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2, is allegedly planning to exit the esports scene by the end of 2023. This became particularly evident with its confirmed departure from the League of Legends LCS 2024 circuit.

While details regarding the fate of EG's Valorant, Counter-Strike (CS) and Dota 2 rosters remain unclear, the departure hints at a potential disbandment, leaving these teams without an organization.

"Sources have told SBJ that Peak6, owners of the Seattle-based Evil Geniuses, have been desperately trying to sell off the esports property either in whole or in parts, but have been unsuccessful thus far," SBJ wrote.

"Industry insiders tell SBJ that Evil Geniuses could be exiting the esports space entirely before the end of the year," the report added.

Despite a mixed 2023 season, with EG Valorant securing the Champions 2023 title and receiving nominations at the Game Awards 2023, the CS team holds a global rank of 37, while the Dota 2 squad finished in the 13th-16th position at The International, representing the South American region.

Renowned as one of the industry's biggest and oldest names, EG claims a diverse fanbase and emphasizes inclusivity, boasting over 14 million followers worldwide, including 17% identifying as LGBTQ+, 36% as women and 46% as people of color.
