Sony's PS VR2 To Get PC Support This Year: Possible Sales Boost?

Zinger Key Points
  • Sony plans PC support for PS VR2, aiming to expand gaming options.
  • There is no release date yet, but it is expected in 2024.

In a recent blog post, Sony Group Corp.'s SONY PlayStation unveiled plans to introduce PC support for its PS VR2 system.

"We are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC," the Japanese company stated.

The headset, originally designed to be compatible solely with the PS5, will soon allow connection to PC gaming rigs. It's worth noting the official PSVR, launched in 2016, got unofficial support for PC.

Meanwhile, the exact release date of this feature remains undisclosed with PlayStation confirming it hoped "to make this support available in 2024.”

The PS VR2 debuted last year with a lineup of more than 30 games, including 13 new titles. However, to further enrich its offerings, the inclusion of PC support can be viewed as a significant advancement.

Despite speculation regarding the breadth of game selection, specifics on the extent of PC support were not provided by PlayStation.

Meanwhile, Sony has not provided recent sales figures for the PS VR2, which raises concerns about the product's performance.

The company's third-quarter financial results reveal the sale of 8.2 million PS5 units, but no data on PS VR2 performance during the holiday season.

The last time Sony shared sales figures for the virtual reality headset was in May 2023, when the multinational announced it had sold nearly 600,000 units within its initial six weeks, exceeding the performance of the original PlayStation VR within a similar timeframe.

Furthermore, data collected by Road to VR shows that for every PS VR2 unit sold, Meta Platforms Inc.'s META Meta Quest sold over 30 units on Amazon in the U.S. during the holiday season. This may not fully represent Sony's overall VR sales but indicates a notable trend.
