From Cannabis Drag Queen To Trans Woman: Laganja Estranja Pays Tribute To Third Gender In Fabulous Photo Shoot

Jay Jackson, better known as Laganja Estranja, is an LGBTQAI+ television personality and cannabis activist, who did a photo shoot with photographer Chris Balidio and makeup artist Tamiko Hobin in Hawaii. The project seeks to pay homage to the Māhūs, the third gender of the Hawaiian Kanaka culture.

“I wanted to pay homage to the Hawaiian Māhūs who have inspired my gender transition,” the "Ru Paul’s Drag Race" season 6 star told HoneySuckle. Māhū translates as "in the middle," which refers to a third gender in Native Hawaiian culture, the other two being kane (male) and wahine (female).

The artist decided to tell her story with photographs, inspired by the culture of the tropical region, which she was able to learn about in a special exhibit at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. The result was a four-part session that took place in Balidio's studio, at Kaimana Beach Hotel and on the ocean, under a clear message of embracing trans identity.
