Congresswoman Nancy Mace: Legislate Marijuana Like Alcohol, Let Each State Decide On Rules

Congresswoman Nancy Mace yet again voiced her support for treating cannabis like alcohol, stressing that each state should set up its own regulations.

“It’s been a very long, harmful and expensive war on the plant and we want to let states be responsible for the cannabis laws they have, state-by-state, and that’s what we’re talking about tonight,” Mace said during a conference with Americans for Prosperity in Charleston, South Carolina earlier this week, reported Live 5 News WCSC.

Mace first introduced the States Reform Act to Congress in 2021.

“This bill supports veterans, law enforcement, farmers, businesses, those with serious illnesses, and it is good for criminal justice reform… The States Reform Act takes special care to keep Americans and their children safe while ending federal interference with state cannabis laws,” Mace said at the time.

The Republican congresswoman has been a cannabis reform advocate for years. She shared some valuable regulatory insights at Benzinga’s cannabis event last year. The Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference is returning to Miami Beach April 11-12.

Last April was just one of many occasions when Mace showed her overwhelming support for cannabis, including her cannabis advocacy on Instagram, Twitter and beyond, which brought her some powerful allies such as the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML).

“Everybody is getting behind the bill, except for the people who are just ignorant on the issue,” Mace told Benzinga’s Javier Hasse in an exclusive interview last year.

Republicans Need To Be On Board With Policy Change

”In order to do cannabis reform responsibly in this country, you have to have Republicans on board,” she continued. "This is where the States Reform Act comes in to say, ‘hey, this is the framework to getting it done, doing it in a bipartisan manner.’”

To that end, Mace will take part at a policy forum in the Capitol Visitors Center of the  Congressional Auditorium scheduled for April 20 - the unofficial marijuana holiday. With her will be other politicians including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senator John Hickenlooper, Representatives Earl Blumenauer, Dave Joyce, Barbara Lee and Brian Mast.

The summit will unite activists and leaders from government, business, healthcare, veterans groups and civil rights organizations to review and analyze the most important cannabis policy challenges and opportunities.
