Airline stocks gained, with NYSE Arca Airline Index (XAL) gaining about 1.63%. The gainers in the list included United Continental Holdings UAL, Alaska Air ALK and Southwest Airlines LUV. Shares of US Airways LCC dropped about 1.5% after analysts at Soleil Securities downgraded the stock from “buy” to “hold” and lowered its 2011 earnings forecast. Tyson Foods TSN was among the top decliners in the food and agribusiness sectors after the US Agriculture Department lifted its price projections for corn and soybeans and projected lower production for grains. The gainers in the list included bio-engineered seed producer Monsanto MON, farm equipment maker Deere DE, agri-business giant Archer Daniels Midland ADM, hog producer Smithfield Foods SFD. Gold futures moved up in the late-session and closed in the black after dropping for most of the session. Gold for February delivery gained 0.1% to $1,385.80 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX). US retail stocks rose slightly, with shares of Lululemon LULU gaining about 9.04%. LULU lifted its Q4 profit projections.
