Jack Dorsey Takes Cue From Musk, Leaves Instagram After 12 Years: 'Clear Eyes, Meta Free, Can't Lose'

As one of the earliest accounts on Instagram and an angel investor, Jack Dorsey’s Elon Musk-like stance on ditching social media platforms owned by Meta Platforms Inc. META has sparked a controversy online.

What Happened: Twitter, now rebranded as X, co-founder Dorsey has bid adieu to his 12-year-long journey on Instagram, and he’s not using WhatsApp and Facebook either. “clear eyes, meta free, can’t lose”

On Friday, after sharing this news on X, when a user asked Dorsey his reasons for taking such a decision, he replied, “All the reasons are too meta to be interesting.”

Naturally, Elon Musk was quick to support Dorsey’s decision.

Apart from Instagram and X, Dorsey also uses Nostr and BlueSky — both backed by him.

Why It’s Important: Dorsey’s latest decision appears to have been impacted by Musk’s anti-Meta stance. The tech billionaire who acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October 2022 previously accused Meta’s Threads of committing the cardinal sin of boring people to death

Earlier in June this year, a report by a Stanford research team suggested that Instagram connects pedophiles and guides them to content sellers via recommendation systems.

It further stated that Instagram had over three times the number of accounts dedicated to selling child sex abuse material than Musk’s Twitter.

In May, a Twitter engineer accused WhatsApp of spying on him through his phone’s microphone. WhatsApp later said that it was a “bug on Android Android,” Musk then said that the instant messaging app “cannot be trusted.”

Last year, Telegram founder Pavel Durov also said that he deleted Meta’s WhatsApp from his device “years ago” because it has been a “surveillance tool for 13 years.”
