Buying Samsung Galaxy S24 For AI Features? Nearly Half Of Them Require An Internet Connection To Work

Zinger Key Points
  • Samsung’s “Galaxy AI” features are one of the key selling points of the company’s latest flagship smartphone.
  • However, a deep dive has reportedly revealed that nearly half of them require an active internet connection to work.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. SSNLF has been touting artificial intelligence (AI) features of its latest flagship, Galaxy S24.

However, a deep dive has revealed that nearly half of Galaxy AI features require an internet connection to work.

What Happened: On Thursday, a Reddit user shared a detailed analysis of the AI capabilities of the Galaxy S24 series. The post gives a brief overview of each feature, but also reveals an important catch about the AI features that Samsung has been promoting.

As per the post, the user tested these features and shared their findings at the beginning of the post, followed by a brief explanation of each feature for context.

According to the user's findings, of the 15 major AI features, seven require an active internet connection to work, while one feature works both on-device and with an internet connection.

Only seven other features work on-device and without an internet connection.

Some of these features which require an internet connection are important, too. This includes summary, spelling correction and generative edits in the Gallery app.

Why It Matters: The Galaxy S24 series’ AI features, known as Galaxy AI, are a key selling point for the new series. These features, which include live translations and generative AI editing for images, are powered by Alphabet Inc.’s GOOG GOOGL Google’s Gemini large-language model.

However, it’s important to note that these features are free only for a limited period, as mentioned in the fine print of Samsung's announcement.
