Apple May Introduce Google Gemini AI Model For iPhone, Mac And iPad, Says Craig Federighi

Apple Inc. AAPL has revealed its plans to integrate Alphabet Inc.'s GOOG GOOGL Google Gemini AI model into its Apple Intelligence feature set.

This move is expected to provide users with a wider range of AI models, in addition to Microsoft Corp.-backed MSFT OpenAI's ChatGPT.

What Happened: Apple’s Senior VP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, shared the company’s plans to expand its AI offerings during a post-WWDC keynote conversation, reported MacRumors.

The integration of Google Gemini is part of Apple’s ongoing efforts to evolve its Apple Intelligence feature set, which currently includes OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Federighi noted that Apple aims to offer users a choice of AI models that best suit their needs, such as those tailored for creative writing or coding. Although no official announcement has been made, Federighi hinted at Google Gemini as a potential future option.

Apple did not immediately respond to Benzinga's request for comment.

The decision to start with ChatGPT was based on Apple’s desire to “start with the best,” Federighi stated.

Siri will utilize GPT-4o for free, without the need for an account. Requests will not be logged, and IP addresses will be obscured. Paid features within the ChatGPT experience will also be available to subscribers.

Apple Intelligence features will not be included in the initial iOS 18 beta but are expected to be available for testing over the U.S. summer. The public release of iOS 18 is anticipated in September.

Why It Matters: Apple’s recent focus on AI integration is part of its broader strategy to enhance user experiences across its devices.

This move comes on the heels of the company’s announcement of its AI-powered personal intelligence features, dubbed “Apple Intelligence,” at the WWDC.

However, not all of these features will be available for all users, as they require the A17 Pro chip at least.
