Russia Says 'The Atmosphere That Has Been Created' In US Is Responsible For Recent Assassination Attempt On Trump: 'Don't Believe That…Was Organized By The Present Power'

The Kremlin said that while it doesn’t think that President Joe Biden and his administration were behind the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, the political environment fostered by Biden’s administration indirectly led to the attack.

What Happened: The former President was injured at a campaign event in Pennsylvania on Saturday, a situation that resulted in one bystander’s death and left two others critically injured.

“We don’t think at all and don’t believe that the attempt to eliminate the presidential candidate Trump was organized by the present power. But it is the atmosphere that has been created by this administration during the political struggle, the atmosphere around the candidate Trump, prompted what America is facing today,” Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesperson said, Business Insider reported on Monday.

Peskov noted that Trump’s life had been under threat for some time, referencing previous efforts to oust him from politics through legal action and political discreditation.

This isn’t the first time Russia has weighed in on U.S. political events, often portraying America as being in disarray. Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that Trump’s felony conviction in Manhattan was politically driven.

Why It Matters: The assassination attempt on Trump has drawn global attention and condemnation. Leaders from G-20 countries, including China's President Xi Jinping and the U.K.'s newly elected Prime Minister Keir Starmer, expressed their concern and extended their sympathies to Trump.

The incident has also impacted the odds of Trump winning the 2024 presidential elections. The odds of Trump securing another term rose to 70% on Polymarket, a cryptocurrency-based prediction market, following the assassination attempt.
