SpaceX, X To Move Headquarters From California To Texas: Musk Calls It The 'Final Straw,' Criticizes Gov. Newsom For 'Attacking Both Families And Companies'

Zinger Key Points
  • X and SpaceX are moving their company headquarters from California to Texas.
  • The move comes after frustration over policies in the state of California Elon Musk disagrees with.

Two companies owned by Elon Musk will be getting new headquarters, according to a post from the billionaire investor.

What Happened: Following the move of electric vehicle company Tesla Inc TSLA changing its headquarters from California to Texas, Musk appears ready to make the move on several other companies he runs.

"This is the final straw. Because of this law and many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas," Musk tweeted.

The tweet came in response to a post sharing that Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) had signed AB1955 into law. The bill makes California the first state in the nation to ban schools from making rules that require parents to be notified if their child identified as transgender or uses different pronouns.

"I did make it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws of this nature would force families and companies to leave California to protect their children."

Musk added that there were "many straws" that came before this, but the bill signing was what "finally did it."

SpaceX already has operations in the state of Texas and will likely see more operations shift there.

"Elon Musk announces the move of SpaceX headquarters to the great state of Texas. This cements Texas as the leader in space exploration," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted.

A short time after announcing SpaceX would move their headquarters to Texas, Musk shared that social media platform X, which he bought for $44 billion in 2022, would also move to the Lone Star State.

"And X HQ will move to Austin."

X is currently headquartered in San Francisco.

"Have had enough of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts to get in and out of the building," Musk added.

Why It's Important: Musk previously moved Tesla from California to Texas and shared in an interview that politics and a lack of timeliness on regulatory approvals played into the reasoning.

It is unclear how many jobs will be impacted and if both companies will continue to have operations in the state of California. While Tesla moved its headquarters, the company still operates its Fremont Factory in California.

The San Francisco Chronicle recently reported that X was working on subleasing its San Francisco headquarters, leaving the company's future in the city in doubt.

Musk has been outspoken about pronouns and transgender issues being used in schools.

One of Musk's children, born Xavier Alexander Musk, filed to change name and gender in 2022. Now known as Vivian Jenna Wilson, Musk's daughter does not have a relationship with her father.

Musk blamed the influence of schools for putting a rift between him and one of his children.

"It's full-on communism…and a general sentiment that if you're rich, you're evil," Musk said, citing the takeover of schools and universities by neo-Marxists.

Musk said at the time that he has a good relationship with all his other children.

"Can't win them all."

Musk drew praise from transgender media personality and former athlete Caitlyn Jenner. "Strong move. The state is not the parent!" Jenner tweeted
